#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

This project was exploring the impact of touch screens in the teaching of mathematics in primary classrooms across Europe.
Initially, the main objective was the acquisition of experience in developing and implementing software using handwriting recognition and touch screens in the instruction of mathematics in elementary education.
The interactive exercises were designed by a team of teachers from the Gennadios Elementary School, Greece, supervised by Dr C. N. Ragiadakos (Pedagogical Institute of Greece), the school of the Irish partner (Newtown National School, a rural school in Co. Loais, Ireland) supervised by its principal John Threadgold and Inishnet’s ICT in Education researcher Dr. Bryn Holmes, (Ireland) and a public Cypriot school (Agios Antonios), supervised by Prof. C. P. Constantinou (University of Cyprus).
The evaluation of the product was undertaken by the Finish partner (Joensuu University) supervised by Prof. R. Aikonen.

The software was designed and developed by Stelios Kessanidis. Head of the R&D department of Gennadios School.

After the initial stages, the software was applied to several students and their reactions, results, feedback and progress was recorded by a team of teachers, headed by Mrs. Nasia Papaeleytheriou, a Gennadios School elementary teacher (Greece).

The following video is an uncut version of one of the several video recordings which were made for evaluation purposes.
If you are patient enough to study the whole video, you will see many aspects of the software and mainly the inovative writting recognition engine which had the ability to tolerate mistakes and to give two levels of hints to assist the student in the beginning.
All students were using the whole system (software, tablet, stylus) for the first time in their life. It is more than obvious that they can use it successfuly after only few minutes of practicing and guiding.

The original video we recorded is the first one below, but since the recording angle does not permit a nice viewing of the tablet’s screen, we created another version of the video by turning it 90 degrees, so as you can better watch it and understand what is going on!
So maybe it is better to see the second one right away! Both videos are in streaming mode and you can also enlarge them.

This is the original video.
